Choo and Santana are the keys. With the '10 Choo and Santana we win right around 90 games. If last years versions show up again, 70.

Choo bounces back. Santana becomes a superstar. Kipnis is solid ... but Ubaldo pitches like a No. 3 not a No. 1
85-77 ... 2nd place

I love winning on opening day, but I kinda wish Hannahan had spread his season RBIs out a bit.

Judging by twitter, the Indians will loose 162 games and Chris Perez will blow every game. You know because he blew an entire 4 last year.

He was throwing 90 today. Won't be shocked if he ends up on the DL & Pestano takes the closer position away from him. Who was arguing with me about how you can't trade Perez BTW? Was that Paul?

This offense looks horrible. At least Choo didnt just get beaned in the same hand he broke last year though.

Indians sign Santana to 5-year 21 mil deal with 6th year club option. Great deal. Was hoping something like this would get done ... buys out one year of FA. He's going to be a superstar and he's locked up through his prime.
Indians need to do this with Kipnis and Masterson, too. John Hart started this model of buying out arbitration and FA years and they need to implement it again.

So essentially this just adds a year but gives him a fatter wallet (not that he doesn't deserve it). I agree on Kipnis & Masterson.

He was locked up through 2016 ... but he was also going to be looking at 12-15 million in arbitration salary if he progresses like we expect. This deal probably saves the Indians $25-30 million and they bought out a year of FA. I like the cost control. These are the kind of deals Tampa was been handing out and the kind of deals John Hart gave Bell, Lofton and company in the 90s.

There's always an element of risk but Hafner was nearing 30 when he signed his extension. Cleveland locked up Santana's prime years. In the post-steroid era, bulky players like Hafner tend to fall off a cliff when they reach their early to mid 30s. Shapiro was a pretty terrible GM. The drafts were horrible, the FA signings were horrible, his only saving grace was getting Santana for Casey Blake and some ACab from the Mariners.

Shapiro was great at picking from other team's developmental talents, but you're right - he was completely awful at drafting. I didn't have a problem with the Hafner deal, it had to be done. He was a big bat / fan favorite and they needed to retain someone. There is always risk and I don't think Hafner was riskier than anyone else. The biggest fault with the deal was that he is a one-dimensional player.

He had an injury history, was off to a horrible start and didn't play a position.
He is the last player they should have tried to keep. And that's not hindsight, I thought that the day they did it.

At least the Tigers didn't jump out of the gates, only playing .500 ball.
Not that I expect that to continue.

Second half starts tomorrow. 3 games out but something tells me the Tigers are going to come on strong now. No changing predictions on games won but how about:
Does the Tribe make a significant trade & for who?
