Johnny vs. Hoge Johnny Manziel: 'I think Merril Hoge needs to worry about his big neckties' BEREA, Ohio --- Browns quarterback Johnny Manziel -- named the starter for Sunday's game against the Titans -- shot back Friday at ESPN's Merril Hoge, his most vocal critic. "I think Merril Hoge needs to worry about his big neck ties,'' said Manziel. "Talking about Merril, he's been that way since I decided to come out for the draft, so I guess that's part of it, but no extra motivation or extra bump for me or anything like that. It's just go out and play and quiet him with the way we go out and win on Sunday. That's what we want to do.'' "He's so sloppy fundamentally,'' Hoge said. "He was reckless and A&M, he's reckless in the NFL. He doesn't play in structure. He doesn't understand concepts and it was very evident in this game. Missed a lot of hots. If you go to the throw, why would the ball sail inside vs. outside. If you watch his footwork, because really the guy he's going to is the guy he should (go) to. It's man on man and you got the ball and it's third down. This is open in the NFL, but watch his footwork, watch how sloppy it is. "He doesn't have a strong enough arm anyway, that's why the ball sails to the outside. Then the reckless aspect of it. He is protected across the board here. There is no reason to run. You know it's third and long, but you have a better shot throwing it within the structure and design of the play than you do in running. Even during the course of the game, do remember the one throw where (Brian) Hartline made a great catch, they blitzed him. He was supposed to throw it hot. The tight end was wide open and he runs. "It's very elementary: he's not gotten better in two years.'' www.cleveland.com/browns/index.ssf/2015/09/johnny_manziel_5.html?utm_source=dlvr.it&utm_medium=twitter

Soloman's injury was a big loss vs the run.
And that's sad.

Soloman's injury was a big loss vs the run. And that's sad. Browns ready to see what Nate Orchard can do in debut Nate Orchard’s Week 1 absence was a product of caution and the numbers game on a largely healthy Cleveland Browns roster. Week 2 promises to be much, much different for the Browns’ second-round pick from Utah. Orchard’s back injury, which also sidelined him for the final two preseason games, is a thing of the past. Additionally, and perhaps more impactful toward how many snaps Orchard plays Sunday against the Titans, starter Scott Solomon will be sidelined for the next few weeks with an ankle injury. That means the Browns will need more from the likes of Armonty Bryant, Barkevious Mingo and, of course, Orchard. “It is an opportunity for myself, so I need to go out there and make the most of it,” Orchard said. “I need to practice hard and show that I deserve to be out there.” Because of Solomon’s emergence throughout the offseason, Orchard was largely relegated to second-team work when he was healthy at training camp. He compiled seven tackles in two preseason games. www.clevelandbrowns.com/news/article-5/Browns-ready-to-see-what-Nate-Orchard-can-do-in-debut/1576e8e3-8fb4-451f-b132-058a3857b5c5

Still want to fail for Cardale? Didn't see the game but his stats look like shit.

Whatever. Sure. We're gonna fail anyway. May as well tell ourselves it's for a reason.

I have no idea how Cardale did what he did at the end of last season but he sure looks like the next Browns QB right now.

Buckeyes started off slow last year too. Last year at this time we are all talking about that sucked. Give them time

I'm guessing Pettine goes back to McCown. Call it a gut feeling.

I know it's only week 2 but the Browns are dead last against the run....again or should I say still.

I'm guessing Pettine goes back to McCown. Call it a gut feeling. If he's cleared I agree.

He sure has been saying nice things about Johnny. Maybe he's just buttering him up for the bench...

I know it's only week 2 but the Browns are dead last against the run....again or should I say still. It's very disappointing. Shelton hasn't looked like the beast we saw in the preseason, Soloman's injury hurt & Mingo & Kruger are clueless against the run. The defense should pretty much spend 90% of the week on stopping the RBs from getting outside.

He sure has been saying nice things about Johnny. Maybe he's just buttering him up for the bench... This place seems split on what they should do. Pretty good chance the people in Berea are split too. Here's the scenarios: 1. Go back to McCown like it's still week 1. He's your starter no matter what. 2. Go back to McCown with the caveat that his leash just got shorter in that your young 1st rounder doesn't appear to be a full retard. 3. Go to Johnny and see if it really is starting to click. He's your starter unless he goes back to full retard or gets hurt (and both could happen quick) 4. Go to Johnny on a short leash. If he struggles you go back to McCown in game or after 1 week. Of them, for the future of the franchise #3 makes the most sense. In sales a quick "no" is a good thing. You don't waste time chasing something that will never happen. Look at this situation like that. You might not agree he was a 1st round pick but he was. So even if you think we already have our "no" we don't. He's played like 15 real NFL quarters. Take away his 2 big plays last week and you can say he did nothing but I saw someone who actually looks like they might be getting it. It's obvious he's taken it more serious and is focused. Now will that translate or is he just to small? Find out so you can get your "no" and get your new QB next season. McCown obviously isn't the QB of the future. He was a bridge and his dumb play shortened that bridge. And I know it's not the answer you would think I would give after saying McCown can manage this team to 7 or so wins this year and is better than Hoyer. It's because given the chance Johnny did not shit the bed like we thought he would. Give him another go and see how ready he is. I just don't know that Pettine will do that. If he thinks Josh has a better chance to win this week then he is going to go with him. He's not thinking about next year. He's thinking about right now and keeping his job. We don't have a GM to have any say. Our meddling owner could but he probably learned his lesson already there.
