It's kind of hard to miss the point of the original Red Dawn but it's apparent somebody did. It wouldn't be a bad way to kill 90 minutes on a JetBlue flight, but in no way was this version better than the original. In fact it's nothing like the original. Similarities between the two versions are Jed & Matt Eckert, Daryl is the Mayor's son, parachutes.
I admire the writers wanting to do their own thing, but none of the great scenes from the original or any feeling at all were brought over. Firing squads, gone. Reeducation camp, gone. Flying Fortress, gone. Powers Boothe killing a tank, gone. Hilarious park sign translation, gone. The great ending where Jed is carrying wounded Matt out of the town, gone.
What there is, is a lot of CGI explosions and fast action chase scenes. Tom Cruise's weird looking adopted kid. A funny twist on the deer's blood scene, and the guy that played Thor cementing the fact that he is Thor for the rest of his life and he might as well change his name to Thor Thorensen or blow his brains out like George Reeves.
I give it four stars (out of ten).

Thor's brother in real life is an actor too. I wonder if he talks like Loki?
