Kevin Smith had a funny observation about how Disney has a monopoly on little girls but no matter how much Mickey wished upon a star, they couldn't get a boy over the age of 6 to give a shit about any of their products. So this year, they cut a couple of billion dollar checks and now they've got Star Wars, now they've got Marvel and now they control 3 of the 5 toy aisles at Walmart and Target.
As far as the product goes, they certainly couldn't fuck it up worse than Lucas was doing. If the first three movies sucked as much as the last three did, we wouldn't be having this conversation.

Think we are looking at a new trilogy of episodes 7-9, or just other offshoot stuff. Thrawn, Kyle Katarn, etc..?
What directors? Verbinski? Bird?
Casting? You think if an older Skywalker and Solo are called for we are more likely to see Hamill and Ford again, or something like Fassbender and Javier Bardem in the roles?

Sorry, I had to check the URL, I heard Kyle Katarn and got confused.
The generally accepted notion that the Thrawn trilogy was supposed to be 7, 8 and 9 is out the window. I don't know if you read those books or not but they would not make good films. The aliens that worship Leia because Vader was her dad? Everyone has a Force bubble who has an iguana around their neck? Luuuuuuke Skywalker? I remember being 10 years old and was like: "Really, he named his ship the 'Wild Karrde'?" Wasn't half of the middle book them hiding in an oven on Kashyyyk? I know Hollywood people, they don't want anyone in or even around an oven.
That said, you could keep certain elements. Mara Jade obviously. Thrawn maybe, but he's not a cinematic Star Wars villain. He's Admiral Piett with blue skin. Jorrus C'Baoth was lame. I hated that whole Outbound Flight shit. I'm pretty sure they'll try to bring in the Yuuzhan Vong at some point. If not in 7, 8 and 9, then 10, 11 and 12.
I don't know about directors, but I know a couple of writers who aren't doing much else right now. Joss Whedon did an okay job his second time out, and I'm pretty sure they have his number. How about Larry and Lana Wachowski? You could have Hugo Weaving play Thrawn and all 3 movies could be in a Coruscant S & M club. Actually, I kind of like that idea.
If they wanted Hamill and Ford, they should have started these in 1998. It's so tough to recast iconic characters like that, especially after 35 years. But if you want to talk about Fassbender as Luke Skywalker, fuck it, let's remake the original trilogy while we're at it.

Whedon is an obvious and intriguing choice. I despise his contribution to the Alien franchise, but Firefly got as close to that original Star Wars flavor as anything else ever has. (As I'm typing this I'm just realizing the hot bitch from Firefly is also the hot bitch from Homeland.) Anyway... The Wachowskis are a non-starter for me. They're Lucas redux - except they managed to cram his fall from grace into one trilogy instead of two. If you're talking about the Wachowskis you might as well give M. Night Shamalamadingdong an interview too.

Oh, and are you saying Fassbender is too old for the role? Luke was 25 or 26 in Jedi. Fassbender is 35 today. No reason he couldn't work for a story set a decade after Endor.

I was kidding about the Wachowski Starship. As much as I like V For Vendetta, I don't want to see Carrie Fisher as an FTM Princess Leia. The Hugo Weaving thing I'm still all for.
It really is too bad about the Matrix. They should have taken their time and thought out a better way to end those. I get that Carrie-Anne Moss was aging like a Progeria kid, but it's not my fault they learned nothing from Sharon Stone.
I don't think Fassbender could play Luke. He could, but it would be a waste. He would make a better Han. I think Daniel Craig could maybe pull off older, Grand Jedi Master Luke in the NJO. Depends how tied up he is with 007 and The Girl With Dragon Tats.
Two ideas I read about Leia that I could live with, Jennifer Lawrence, she's a hot, tough type chick, but she's already in two other trilogies and if you use Craig as Luke (or Luuuuuuke) then she's way too fucking young. And Keira Knightly, ironic that she played Padme's double in the second first one, so the resemblance factor would certainly be there. Granted she's only 5 years older than Lawrence, but it's easier to make a young chick old than an old chick young. Plus, as 2015 turns 2018 turns 2021 you'll be glad she's not Carrie-Anne Moss or Sharon Stone.

I could see this. I get that I just made Luke like 10 years older than Han, but Hamill got fucked up by that car accident and looked older than Ford in 5 and 6 anyway.
