"Mysterious ways" lose a lot of their mystery the first time you walk out your front door and realize there's no one, NO ONE, in charge of this fucking place. Shit happens, do your best with it, and don't be a dick about it. As far as morality goes, people always know the right thing to do. They know because the right thing to do is always the harder thing to do. Anyone who needs to look in a book for an answer they already know in their bones is just searching for a loophole. Have you read the bible? I have completely once, by force, and parts on and off many many many times. Never once with a spiritual mindset either, like I said above Dad called it a great tool and like MOST Dads I took his word as gospel.... It really is a great read, if you can wade through the bullshit to find the core.

Voodoo - exactly one reason I can't be ever convinced 100% there is a God. And maybe even more so - babies born with down syndrome or a child who dies of cancer. I mean maybe this God doesn't want to step in and stop a Hitler but what exactly is his "plan" with the above? Everything happens for a reason? Well what's the fucking reason for that? Also, I think this is becoming a real good conversation. I wonder if we should create a thread about this and pull all of this out of random bullshit and keep it going? I love talking about this shit and it seems most of you do as well. I'm ok with that. As long as everyone agrees to not get offended...I have some strong views about the church. Generally I find long discussions on race, religion and politics tend to chill friendships, not on my end, but on the other end when the person realizes how fucked up I think the world's view on all three of those topics is. And to add, IF there really is a God, you suck. Ok, diz is praying for me too I hope. I am probably the hardest person you've ever met to offend. And I think a lot of us here are like that. And some of the best conversations I've ever been in have been about religion, politics & race. If you have a brain you can debate this shit without actually getting mad at people. I'll add Astronomy to that. But I think a lot of those conversations were drug induced.

I agree Tommy, I love these discussions. I went to 12 years of catholic school. I feel that having discussions like this and examining faith are healthy discussions. I can't stand when people are close minded about religion.
To me nobody is wrong, nobody is right. God and the afterlife is the great unknown. If believing in God gives one hope and faith that allows inner strength, fantastic. If someone like flats doesn't believe and intelligently discusses it also fantastic.
There are only two groups of religious I can't tolerate much. Jehovah's and the crazy born again sects. Jehovah's bother me the most though. They changed their core beliefs once the math no longer worked in their favor.

If you tell me there is a god, i will say there is not.
If you tell me there is no god, i will say there is.
To think, this all started because i told sig i was staying away from the boards because i was born again and didn't have a place for the negativity in my life. Ha, got ya bud.

I think faith and religion are two different things.
Faith is the confidence that you've done the right things and as such things should go in your favor. I.E. I've gone down on my wife and I have faith she will do the same.
Religion is the exploitation of feeble-minded people for money. Pay me or go to hell.

Can we discuss race too? Ok thanks.
Racism is an oxymoron in itself. Guess what? The human race is all we got. You cannot have subsets also called races.
For me its like this, I don't like you until you show me why I should. I equally dislike whites, blacks, yellows, and browns, and sorry if you're pink or tan colored, didn't mean to leave you out, you suck too until proven otherwise.

I am, a bit darker now that I have my new trees and my garden in. My daughter who is now 9 came home from school one day and as age was having her after school snack looked at me and said "did you know Obama was colored?". I said "sure, my favorite color brown".

The Catholic church does its constituents a greta disservice by force-feeding rote, devising and implementing strange yet ironclad rules, and professing a heavy-handed exclusionary method. I grew up Catholic, and was turned off of church too for a while, while remaining "faithful" at heart.
I recently found a church that approaches things in a completely different manner. It isn't about ritual and rules, more it is about getting to know the messages God and Jesus professed so you can truly understand them and take them to heart. This has helped my faith immeasurably, and gives me a lot more positive outlook on life.
For me the basic existence of God comes down to "I think therefore I am". Free will is incongruous with the laws of physics and chemistry. Random collisions of molecules don't choose between a Gin and Tonic and a Makers and Ginger. And once you believe, you can see the work of God in everyday life. It's hard to explain without sounding crazy or cultified and delusional, but there are things that happen in the world that prove a divine existence of you look for them.
Having faith is important, having religion and dogma isn't. Exploring and knowing your faith is an obligation if you have it, or are the least bit curious about it. And my life has become measurably and markedly better the deeper I adopt and explore my faith. Hard to explain why, but the less you make life about yourself, the more fulfilling it is. Kind of like a Chinese finger prison.
Why does God let bad things happen to people? I don't know. But they're a part of the world, and it is my obligation to help those less fortunate, as I have been blessed with more than enough. So I take the assistance fo the unfortunate as a mandate in my life.
The true teachings of Jesus are unbelievably relevant today. If he wasn't the Son of God, he was a philosopher of unparalleled genius and bravery, especially for his time, who's teachings have lasted the test of time. Again, look at the teachings over how man has interpreted them and you can see that.
And if your church doesn't help you know and learn the teachings in favor of rote, you may be wasting your time on Sunday.

The cartels are to drugs and the mafia is to gambling and prostitution what the catholic church is to child rape. I was an altar boy and never experienced this. With that said, the catholic practice of celibacy has far outlived its time. It's a joke that the leaders of the church must take a vow to this. Jesus wasn't celibate, why should priests be? How ate they to relate and lead their parishioners when they can't relate to 95% of their issues. Dated policy that has zero basis in the bible.
