Does anybody here go to church on a regular basis? I have an aversion to organized religion, but I consider myself to be quite a spiritual person. Big fan of Joseph Campbell's work.

I don't go to church much to my mothers chagrin. Doesn't mean I'm not a spiritual person. I have a strong belief system, but just have had a few personal issues with organized religion.

I don't go. I'm not spiritual either. I believe in ethics and morality, but not a supreme being, an afterlife, or any other "supernatural" stuff. I don't believe there's anything else out there. I don't have that kind of faith in me. It isn't a "choice" to not be religious - I couldn't be genuinely religious if I tried. I suppose I could go to church every week and fake it to be on the safe side, but really, I would only be fooling the people around me - not God. If I'm right, I'm right. If I'm wrong, hey it was an honest mistake Lord, I called it like I saw it. And at least I never tried to bullshit you.

As I got older I realized many that I saw every Sunday were just going through the motions because it was right. Tried other faiths and was somewhat shocked to see so many churches be all about the pastor and not about the faith. To each his own. I believe in God, and my faith has seen me through a lot. I don't need to be seen every Sunday in a group to have a relationship with God.

I kinda feel on an island sometimes. Even though I'm an atheist I feel like I gave the matter serious thought and consideration. IMO that's more respect than someone who goes to church once a week out of sheer habit gives to the subject. OTOH I find the "atheist community" to be pretty unbearable too. Seems like most people who identify as atheist do so not because they don't believe in god, but because they hate him. They've got some axe to grind, something that happened which they can't forgive him for. It's a darker place than my feelings come from.

Raised in a Methodist church, youngest of 5. By the time I came around my Dad (raised a Southern Baptist, very strict) had stopped believing himself. So naturally I subscribed to his way of thinking. Years later I was "born again", and dove in head first with a church in Jackson, IL with my girlfriend, Toni. We were engaged, she fucked around on me, we broke up, I stopped believing, again, right there. I believe we're organisms, not some higher form of being that's entitled to fuck up everything around us.
Being raised Baptist my Dad, who was a very bright man, had read the bible many times. He was one of those people that could memorize the order of a 52 card deck in just a few minutes and read them back to you. He knew the bible that well, too. Woody used to say the bible was the best book ever written on management. I still remember the day he told, "if you want to manage people better, read the bible".

Flats gets it.
---
I spent a lot of time in church growing up. I was baptized in a Lutheran church and remember "Sunday school" with games out in the church yard playing red rover red rover let "oh God I hope it's not me" come over. I then became an acolyte. I sat on a stage in a goofy white robe with a black overlay after lighting the stack of candles on "my side" for the entire service.. ... and then put out the candles at the end and went home.
Once I knew when communion was that was the shift you wanted. The REAL wine they used for the those tiny little glasses adds up after a while. Why people turned it down I don't know but it sure was nice of them. I know my dad picked me up a few times and had to of smelled it. Or did he?
Then I started playing guitar a little and left the "Giant pipe organ" & "stand there like a mummy and sing" Lutheran church and went to a music oriented church. That church happened to be Catholic.
I didn't know the difference then and I could care less now. There were cute girls everywhere and musicians to play with. Wow! What a change! I went for a little while, met a couple dates (why is it always blonds?) ...had some fun.. got bored, and did something else.
I don't go to church on a regular basis now. I'm not apposed to it or anything. I would go. But if it's football Sunday I'm opting for BBQ and a dozen craft brews on ice. Call me what you want. I can take it.

We go to church every few weeks. I'm far from being real religious but think there's a decent chance at some sort of a God. Either way I don't see an hour a week or every few weeks as that big of a deal. I hold my kid, look at all the folks from my city including the milfs, say a prayer or two and go home.
It's probably the Italian blood in me that thinks its an okay tradition.
I have no problem with anyone that doesn't believe in anything. And I can't stand people that flaunt their religion or try to push it on others.

I am a recovering catholic. I would say agnostic is probably the best way to describe it now.
Is there a higher being? Maybe, but there is no proof. Too much scientific evidence that some things claimed to be of a super natural power have been proven otherwise scientifically.
If there is a greater being that is responsible for everything that is & controls our ultimate destiny I want to have a fucking chat with the sick sonofabitch. I mean really. Who the fuck could just sit there & watch millions of people systematically tortured & put to agonizing death at the hands of mad men like Hitler, Himmler, etc, etc and their work at Auschwitz, Dachau etc, etc.

Voodoo - exactly one reason I can't be ever convinced 100% there is a God. And maybe even more so - babies born with down syndrome or a child who dies of cancer.
I mean maybe this God doesn't want to step in and stop a Hitler but what exactly is his "plan" with the above? Everything happens for a reason? Well what's the fucking reason for that?
Also, I think this is becoming a real good conversation. I wonder if we should create a thread about this and pull all of this out of random bullshit and keep it going? I love talking about this shit and it seems most of you do as well.

"Mysterious ways" lose a lot of their mystery the first time you walk out your front door and realize there's no one, NO ONE, in charge of this fucking place. Shit happens, do your best with it, and don't be a dick about it.
As far as morality goes, people always know the right thing to do. They know because the right thing to do is always the harder thing to do. Anyone who needs to look in a book for an answer they already know in their bones is just searching for a loophole.

Generally I find long discussions on race, religion and politics tend to chill friendships, not on my end, but on the other end when the person realizes how fucked up I think the world's view on all three of those topics is. And to add, IF there really is a God, you suck. Ok, diz is praying for me too I hope.
